At ShareTracker, we diligently monitor year-over-year trends, analyze how the trends change and evaluate the why behind the data. We recently pulled the data for 2015 net adds and broke them out into prepaid and postpaid categories to allow the data to tell its story.

Read below to check out our findings:

Last year, ShareTracker data reported a 154 percent increase in postpaid net adds from 2013 to 2014. The growth rate of postpaid service net adds was notable verses the average declining rate of 34 percent for prepaid service over the same two year period.*
This year, ShareTracker data reports a 7 percent decrease in postpaid net adds from 2014 to 2015. The decline of postpaid service net adds was notable verses the average increase of 114 percent for prepaid service over the same two year period.*
ShareTracker: Prepaid Postpaid Cart
Eric Fogle, ShareTracker president, said this prepaid/postpaid data from 2014-2015 indicates that consumers are continuing their longer trend towards prepaid wireless services even in an increasingly positive economic environment. This is likely the result of continued heavy advertising campaigns for prepaid wireless services coupled with increased awareness and comfort from these extended campaigns that prepaid services use top carrier’s network, but at a lower cost for the consumer.

*Results encompass subscribers that utilize voice and data devices. Data devices include tablets and mobile hotspots.
